Blog #21: Fall For Marsala (Korean Make-Up)

Can you feel it? Can you feel the transition from Summer to Fall?

I can't. We're supposed to be ushering in the rainy season now but the sun just won't let up. It feels as if we're going through Summer all over again. Imagine getting 40 degrees weather? WTF???

Anyway, as I've mentioned, it's already Fall in most parts of the world and that means a new color trend. According to Pantone, there are a bunch of colors fit for this season but I decided to tackle just one, the Pantone 18-1438 Marsala, a rich wine-red-brown marriage of colors.

Now I know not a lot of us like bold, vampy looks but isn't it nice to go wild every once in awhile? My post for today shows how we can incorporate the Fall color into our regular made up look without ending up like Morticia Adams.

Marsala looks like Burgundy's twin sister who stayed long under the sun. It's more brownish than reddish compared to Burgundy. Incorporating it into a make-up look is very tricky. We might end up looking Gothic or worse, Dracula's bride. It's key to make sure that all components complement each other, not overpower one another.

Let's start with the basics. In order to execute a flaw-free wine-themed look, we must create a clean, smooth canvas. Think of your face as a white paper which you will fill with vivid colors.

  • Smooth Skin - most use BB Creams to achieve a translucent, glowing skin without the heaviness and thickness of foundation. Problem with BB is its longevity. You'll need to retouch every once in awhile especially those with oily skin like mine. An awesome alternative? Cushions. No, I'm not talking about the fluffy thing we sit on to feel comfortable. It's that revolutionary BB / liquid foundation that's absorbed by a sponge and placed in a compact. It's revolutionary because it packs a lot of benefits including the promise of no longer needing a base to have smooth and clear skin. The best cushion I've tried is Iope Air Cushion XP. It comes straight from Seoul from one of the most prestigious companies in Korea, Amore Pacific.

  • Dewy Matte - gone are the days we pile on foundation after foundation to achieve that pimple-free matte skin which ended up getting cakey as we accumulate sweat. We now turn to powder pacts that promise matte skin that looks natural and dewy throughout the day. Laneige, another brand of Amore Pacific, joins the bandwagon with its Brush Pact with built in applicator for convenient application.

It works so well with cushions as it doesn't leave streak marks. I also love how convenient the built in applicator is. No need to bring a separate brush with me.

  • Defined Features - those who have the same complex as mine (flat nose, round cheeks) need not worry. We don't need those shading thingy. No heavy contouring needed. We just need a trusty, reliable highlighter and we're set. Skin Food has the perfect product for this, the All Over Muffin Cake Finish.

Where to highlight? Just a vertical swipe of highlighter on the center of the nose (from the end of the forehead to the tip of the nose) will give instant lift and illusion of pointier nose. Just make sure that the highlighter is well blended to avoid a caked up nose.

For more prominent cheekbones, smile and swipe some highlighter from the apples of the cheeks working up to the temples.

  • Soft Smoky Eyes - this is probably the hardest look to execute for the eyes. It's so easy to mess up a smoky make-up. Too much dark tone, improper blending of colors, etc. An easy way of creating smoky eyes is picking two complementary colors. For my look, I chose burgundy (Look At My Eyes Cafe PK004, top image) as my darker shade and rose gold (Look At My Eyes Jewel PK002 Shimmering Rose Gold Scarf, below image) as the lighter color, both from Etude House.

Apply the darker shade on the edge of your eyelids (the part where we the eyeliner ends) working your way to the center of the lids making a long C shape. Then, apply the lighter eyeshadow starting from the inner lids (the part nearest to the nose bridge) and extend to meet the darker shade in the middle. Blend the center with a round eyeshadow brush to get the perfect marriage of burgundy and rose gold.

Rose Petal Lips - gradient lips has been a trend since 2014 in Korea and is slowly making its way to the rest of the world. Having gradient lips instead of full-on color is the safest way to wear Marsala or Burgundy make-up. It tones down the bold colors of the face and sets the eyes as the focal point. I decided to go with a wine-colored lipstick from The Face Shop, the Face It Creamy Matte PP401. It's the perfect lippie for gradation since it glides smoothly and has a creamy matte texture. It's easier for me to work with creamy matte formulation than glossy and full on matte lippies when doing gradient lips since creamy matte lipsticks tend to apply smoothly and last longer.

The shade is heavenly! I love how it's not too dark and have just the right hint of burgundy and red. I first pat on Iope Air Cushion all over my lips to neutralize the color then applied the lipstick on the inner lips only. Using a lip brush, I spread the color lightly towards the outer lips, leaving an ample portion untouched.
