What is it with celebrities that almost everything they touch turns to gold? What do we call it, Midas' Touch? I remember watching an episode of MNET's K-Style where Irene and Sarah discussed how a lipstick seen from a K-drama sold out like hot pancakes even if the cost is crazy.
So yeah, it seems like the best way to market your product is to do placement on TV series which has an influential celebrity or character who will use it and you're guaranteed a phenomenon. We've seen proofs of this after all, right?
1. My Love From Another Star / You Who Came From The Star
Yes. How can we have this list without mentioning this K-drama? This series starred Korean top star Jun Ji Hyun (My Sassy Girl) and then up and coming star, Kim Soo Hyun (Moon Embracing the Sun). The series catapulted Kim Soo Hyun to superstar status and Jun Ji Hyun to iconic star.
Besides having an awesome love line, this series also introduced a lot of make-up trends to the general public. Most are local brands such as Iope and Hanyul and international brands like YSL. Cheon Song Yi (Jun Ji Hyun) had a hand in creating this phenomenon by using their products on the show.
Here are the items as seen in the series:
- Iope Water Fit Lipstick #44 (Forever Pink)
- Hanyul Ja Woon Dan Moisturizing Cure Balm
- Iope Air Cushion
- Laneige Serum Intense Lipstick in Neon Orange
2. Birth of a Beauty
Sa Geum Ran's transformation into the goddess Sara paved the way for the birth of a beauty. Han Ye Seul is the perfect little Ms. Perfect with her slim body, small face and bright aura. Audiences were captivated by her beauty which was emphasized by natural, barely-there make-up. Her lips stood out and we got curious as to what product it was. It was none other than YSL Rouge Volupte 33 Rose Neillia!
3. It's Okay, That's Love
Gong Hyo Jin is one of my favorite Korean actresses. She has an unconventional beauty and charm that no other actress has not to mention a flair for acting that's super natural. I started liking her when I watched her in the series, The Greatest Love. Her chemistry with Cha Seung Won was off the hook! That's why I was very happy when I found out she did a series with Jo In Sung (yes, that hot stud muffin). Seeing her in the series was an eye-opener for me. She totally rocked her fresh, chic look. For the series, she donned a vivid orange shade from Armani Lip Maestro (300).
4. Kill Me, Heal Me
Yes, we have the sole male trendsetter on our list. Ji Sung made waves when he starred in Kill Me, Heal Me as a chaebol who went to a traumatic past that led to him having memory lapses and his personality fracturing to seven different identities. One of the personalities that amused the audiences was Ahn Yo Na. Not only did this character earned Ji Sung appreciation for his natural acting skills but also spawn a following for his lip tint of choice, Hera Sheer Holic Pop Tint.
5. Pinocchio
Park Shin Hye became an official endorser of Amore Pacific's brand, Mamonde in 2014. It was no wonder she used the brand in one of her popular series, Pinocchio. In the series, the Mamonde Creamy Tint Color Balm was introduced and became a household name to Korean ladies. In the series she used two shades, a pink and orange one.
6. That Winter The Wind Blows
Song Hye Gyo is one of the natural beauties of South Korea that I can't stop looking at. There's something so ethereal about her that will capture you. When she starred in That Winter The Wind Blows as a blind lady, her purity and mild character left an impact on the audience as well as her lipsticks of choice. Being an official ambassador, it was no surprise that she used Laneige Silk Intense Lipstick (Beige Chiffon and Pink Garden).
7. I Miss You
Yoon Eun Hye's lipstick in I Miss You was crazy gorgeous! That rich matte hot purplish pink lip color that totally complemented her fair, milky skin. It was no wonder sales for Nars Schiap lipstick soared when the drama came out!
8. The Innocent Man / Nice Guy
Han Jae Hee's lip color has been a hot issue on the series. It was nude, bordering pale which contrasted her somewhat bold and manipulative character. Being an endorser of Espoir, the actress used the brand's lipstick, No Wear in BE302.
Now that we got a peek on our favorite celebs' beauty loot from their k-dramas, the true questions remain. Will we have soft skin like Cheon Song Yi if we use Hanyul? Do we get a kiss from Song Joong Ki if we wear Espoir's lipstick like Han Jae Hee? Will we be as fab as Ahn Yo Na if we swipe on some Hera lip tint?
Ahh... the tough ones.
